 This course consists of three parts:

• Confidence Intervals
• Tests of Hypotheses
• Practical Project in Data Gathering and Statistical Analysis

COURSE GOALS

  The successful completion of Statistics II will enable the student to analyse and evaluate statistical information (including using statistical software), sharpen mathematical skills, draw legitimate statistical inferences from sets of data and f rom the scientific literature, and communicate these results and the significance of these results to others.

 The goals of the course are:

• To give the students an understanding of statistics
• To teach the student how to use statistics to solve different kind of problems
• To give the students the necessary background that is needed to study and understand upper division courses that use statistics

HOMEWORK

 Formation of study groups is encouraged, but to succeed in this course students must individually work problems that apply the ideas that are presented in class and in the text. There will be weekly assignments (approximately 10) that will be collected and graded. Assignments will count 10 % of the final grade.

 Solution to the assignments must be written (clearly) using the terminology of the course. Reference of the results used must be given.

EXAMS

 There will be two midterm tests, each of one hour duration on the following dates:

Test #2 March

Points will be distributed as follows:

OTHER RECOMMENDATIONS

 It is recommended that the student:

• Studies the assigned section in detail before coming to class
• Brings questions to ask in class
• Regularly goes to instructor's office hours
• Takes notes, and if possible, s/he fills in details at home.
• Attends classes, class attendance is very important so you are expected to be in every class meeting shown in the class schedule.
• Do not miss exams, make-up tests are given only under very special circumstances. .
