Army Cadet Corps Affiliated With The Second Battalion, Nova Scotia Highlanders (Cape Breton)

There are currently 4 corps on Cape Breton Island which have the Battalion as their affiliated unit and are located in the following areas: Glace Bay , Sydney , Sydney Mines, and Judique. A brief description of each follows:

# 2878 Cape Breton Highlanders Army Cadet Corps

This corps has a long and productive history, contributing a large number of its former members to Canada ’s Forces, in general and the 2nd Battalion Nova Scotia Highlanders (CB) in particular. It was begun as a school corps and was originally designated Scotia Army Cadet Corps. A few years ago the Cape Breton Highlanders Association became its sponsor and the corps subsequently requested and received authority for the name change and to wear the cap badge of the CBH. The present Commanding Officer is Capt Joe Worthington. The corps trains and holds regular parades at the Glace Bay Armories.

#1917 Vimy Ridge Army Cadet Corps

This corps is also a comparatively new organization and was organized circa 1997 (the 80 th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge). In the 1950s and 60s, there was an open corps located on the North side, the Cape Breton Highlanders Army Cadet Corps, which sent many of its members to Canada’s Forces (including at least 3 colonels-one of whom was Col. A.W. Morrison, current Honorary Colonel of The Nova Scotia Highlanders). The corps parades at Sydney Mines in one of the local schools, and the current Commanding Officer is Capt. Robert Feit.

#2632 Judique Army Cadet Corps

This corps also began its service some forty-five years ago, as a school corps, at Mabou, Cape Breton . It was later to move to its current location, some 20 or so years ago, and draws from several locales in Inverness County; it is located at the Judique Community Centre.The corps in the process of a reorganization, and is commanded by Maj. Joe Tobin, former organizer of the Vimy Ridge Corps and who also serves in the Area Cadet Office of Maritime Command.

# 3060 Coriano Ridge Army Cadet Corps

This is the most recent corps in the area, having been formed in 1999. Sydney had originally supported 2 corps, one at Sydney Academy , disbanded a couple of decades ago, and another at the former CB Regional Vocational School, long since disbanded. The Coriano Ridge corps is based at the Coriano Building, Victoria Park Armories. and is thus co-located with its affiliated unit; the Commanding Officer is Capt. Mark Kelly.
