Textbook: Calculus – Single Variables – 6th Edition

Author:  Robert A. Adams.

 

Major topics include:

  1. Velocity, growth rate, area, limits of functions, one-sided limits, limit at infinity, infinity limit and continuity, continuous extensions and removable discontinuities, continuous functions on closed, finite intervals, formal definition of limits and proofs.

 

  1. Tangent lines and their slopes, definition of derivative, basic differentiation formulae and chain rule.

 

  1. Mean Value Theorem, increasing/decreasing functions, using derivatives, higher-order derivatives, implicit differentiation, velocity, acceleration and falling under gravity, and using Maple for derivatives.

 

  1. Related rates, extreme values, concavity and inflections, the first and second derivative test, sketching the graph of a function, Newton’s method, linear approximations.

 

  1. Antiderivatives, differential equations and initial value problems, areas as limits of sums, and definition of the definite integral.

 

Marking Scheme:

               Assignments                         15%

               2 Midterms (20% each)        40%

               Final                                     45%

Each of the midterms will be written during the lab time on Tuesday from 2:30-3:45pm.
