June 2013 Never Say Die! The Autobiography of a Ghanaian Statesman has been launched in Accra, Ghana. The book, published by the Ghana Universities Press, is coauthored by Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, a prominent Ghanaian political leader, and the Communication Department’s Dr. Felix Odartey-Wellington. It chronicles Nyaho-Tamakloe’s challenging experiences as a soldier, medical practitioner, sports administrator, politician, and diplomat. Never Say Die! has been critically acclaimed as “a memoir of resilience in the face of political challenges...interesting and fast-paced” and “an important work in the relatively undeveloped field of well-researched biographies of contemporary Ghanaian political leaders.”

September 2011 Michael G. MacDonald of CBU’s Communication Department is the title character in the locally-produced horror-comedy film The Legend of the Psychotic Forest Ranger which will be shown at Empire Theatres in Sydney on Thursday, September 8 at 7:00 pm. Admission is pay what you can. This movie has been accepted for inclusion in the 2011 Atlantic Film Festival in Halifax. It has already played to two sold-out audiences at Empire Theatres in August.

April 2011 Congratulations to Dr. Tanya Brann-Barrett on receiving a SSHRC Standard Research Grant for her research project titled “The learning significance of place-based and virtual communication networks in how young people living in disadvantaged regions experience civic engagement.” The study examines ways older youth (age 16-28) living in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality learn about, experience and understand civic engagement. We're so proud of you!

March 2011 Dr Alex Sévigny visits Communication Department. McMaster University Communication professor Dr Alex Sévigny recently paid a courtesy call on the Communication Department when he visited CBU on 3rd March at the invitation of the Shannon School of Business to deliver a speech on topic:Harnessing the Power of Social Media: How it is transforming who we are and how we do business.”After an informal chat with faculty at one of the Communication Department’s communication labs, Dr Sévigny joined Dr Felix Odartey-Wellington’s Strategic Corporate Communication class, where he delivered a guest lecture on social media and corporate communication. A highly accomplished communication professional and scholar, Dr Sévigny is associate professor of Communication Studies and Multimedia at McMaster University, and the executive director of the McMaster Communication Metrics Lab. He was accompanied by Tanya Collier MacDonald, journalist and Manager of Communications, Sydney Tar Ponds Agency, and also a graduate student at McMaster University.

November 2007 Congratulations are in order for Tanya Brann-Barrett who successfully defended her PhD thesis "The Way We See It: An Analysis of Economically Disadvantaged Young People's Experiences and Perceptions of Social and Economic Health in Their Semi-Rural Community" on
Friday 02 November 2007 at the University of British Columbia. The details are below in the e-mail sent by her gradute supervisor to the Department of Educational Studies at UBC. The examining committee (listed below) all agreed that the study was of great significance and applauded the clarity of writing and organization of the dissertation. They also noted the substantive theoretical orientation and the consistency with which Tanya employed key concepts in the analysis and implications. Well done..... we now await the conversion of the thesis to a bestseller! This new technology will be maintained by Dawn White, the Lab Coordinator, and the facilitators' on-site supervisor.

May 2006 Congratulations to Dr. Judy Rolls! Judy was presented with the Instructional Leadership Award at this year's Cape Breton University convocation ceremony.

March 2006 Congratulations to Dawn White! Dawn was awarded the Outstanding Achievement in Acting Award for her performance as 'Mouth' in Samuel Beckett's "Not I." The production was directed by Dr. Rod Nicholls and opened the 35th Annual Elizabeth Boardmore Festival of One-Act Plays at Cape Breton University.

March 2006 Congratulations to Celeste Sulliman! Celeste was presented with the Father Paul Abbass award for her support and friendship to the CBU Students' Union. The award was presented as a surprise to Celeste on Friday 17 March 06 by outgoing Student's Union President and former Communication Lab Peer Facilitator, Scott Thomas. Many friends and students were in attendance to share this honor with Celeste.

June 2005 CBU invites applications for  Communication Assistant Professor for and 8-month term in the 2005/06 academic year. The successful candidates will teach Introduction to Interpersonal Communication and/or Introduction to Public Communication, Performance Studies and Facilitation Practicum. must have a PhD with emphasis on the human communication dimension of the discipline. Applicants with an MA and exceptional qualifications may also be considered.

All proceeds raised from this production will be donated to Transition House and the 2005 Spotlight Campaign: Women in Iraq. November 8, 2004 UCCB captures the Atlantic Debating Championship. On November 5-7, the CUSID (Canadian University Society for Intercollegiate Debate) Atlantic Debating Championships were held at Memorial University, NL. After 17 years of competition, UCCB argued its way to the top. Congratulations to Marc Botte & Patrick McNeil and everyone in the Debate Society! Communication Lab FacilitatorsNovember 4, 2004 The Communication Lab Peer Facilitators pitched in this week to fill shoe boxes with Christmas gifts as part of Operation Christmas Child; a program developed by Samaritan's Purse. In 2003, 6.6 million shoe boxes (732,000 from Canada) were collected worldwide and distributed to children in about 95 countries. October 2004 The UCCB Students' Union in cooperation with the UCCB Debate Society are hosting the Mayoral Debate between Mayor John Morgan and Dan Fraser on October 8, 2004. The debate will be moderated by Professor Michael MacDonald and questions from the floor will be coordinated by Marc Botte, the Debate Society President.

September 15, 2004 On Tuesday, October 19th, Students' Union President of 1974, Dr. Judith A. Rolls (first woman to be SU President) will be Students' Union President for the day. A 1970's Day will be hosted by UCCBSU, so dress up in 70's style and make Judy's day as SU President FUN!

June 2004 UCCB invites applications for part-time Communication Lecturers for the 2004/05 academic year. The successful candidates will teach Introduction to Interpersonal Communication and/or Introduction to Public Communication. Applicants must have the following: A Master's degree in Communication; a high level of teaching ability; and a familiarity with experiential learning  and communication labs. Reference number: COM0406. Applications including a c.v., academic transcripts and three references must be received by the Human Resources Department by 4:00 pm July 30, 2004. May 8, 2004 We are proud to announce our Communication student graduates of 2004: Shaun Gillis (BA-Concentration), Laura MacKeigan (BA-Concentration), Aiden Buckland (BA-Major), Joanne Delahunt (BA-Major), Hanna Desjardins (BA-Double Major).


November 14-16, 2003 The UCCB Debate Society ventured to St. Thomas University in Fredericton to compete in the CUSID (Canadian University Society for Intercollegiate Debate) Atlantic Debating Championships. Seven schools competed in the 22 team tournament that featured 44 debaters. UCCB Debating Society president, Aaron Fisher, spoke highly of UCCB`s results at the tournament. “Under the current administration, not only did we have two teams in the quarter-finals for the first time ever, UCCB also took home the top speaker award (Aiden Buckland) and the top public speaker award (Aiden Buckland)." May 4, 2002 The UCCB Debate Society held their in-house debate and public speaking tournaments where participants competed for $3,500 in scholarships. The Dora MacDonald Public Speaking Tournament was won by Aiden Buckland, while Ingrid Grant placed second and Marc Botte placed third. The Bourninot Debate Tournament saw close competition, but it was Patrick McNeil and Marc Botte who placed first, and Ingrid Grant and Patrick Chasse placed second. The group also held their awards and closing ceremony after the tournaments and are looking forward to placing well and enjoying themselves again in next year's tournaments.

November 2-4, 2001 UCCB hosted the Atlantic University Debate Tournament - a first-time event for the University College and its' Debate Society. The event is fitting for this year's team who is on a winning streak. More than 30 teams from across Atlantic Canada were on campus to take part in the tournament which included both debating and public speaking components. The Society has had an impressive track record in 2001. In September, the novice teams traveled to Dalhousie University in Halifax to compete in the Novice Tournament. For the first time in UCCB history, the team received both top speaker and top team. In October, the Society received first and third place teams, and first and second place speakers at a tournament held at Atlantic Baptist University in Moncton. Nationals were held in February 2002 in British Columbia.

October 18, 2001 Official Dedication of the Dr. Mary A. Lynch Communication Lab. Today's dedication of the communication lab is in recognition of Dr. Lynch's outstanding leadership as the founding member of UCCB's Communication Department and the historical importance of communication as a discipline within UCCB. It is also a testament to her lifelong commitment to speech communication and the Department's ten fold expansion during her 24-year tenure at Xavier Junior College and later, UCCB. For more than 25 years, UCCB has operated the Communication Experiential Learning Laboratory. In fact, UCCB's Communication Lab Model is the longest running communication lab in North America.
