Dr. Tanya Brann-Barrett is the Dean of Research and
Graduate Studies and an Associate Professor of Communication. She currently
holds a SSHRC Standard Research Grant for her research project titled "The
Learning Significance of Place-based and Virtual Communication Networks in
How Young People Living in Disadvantaged Regions Experience Civic
Engagement". The study examines ways older youth living in small
post-industrial regions learn about, experience, and understand community
engagement. She has published and presented
her work locally, nationally and internationally in areas that
include social exclusion and
rural education; issues of public engagement and citizenship as they relate
to youth, gender, and class; and reflexive approaches to multi-media and
arts-related ethnography. Dr. Brann-Barrett teaches courses in Health
Communication, Family Communication, Film and Communication, Communication
Training and Development, Communication Criticism as well as Interpersonal
and Public Communication. Her contributions to the community include the
design and facilitation of communication training for school children,
community groups and organization, and businesses. She also facilitates
‘community engagement through art-making’ workshops throughout the region. Office: B212Phone: (902) 563-1843 Email: tanya_barrett@cbu.ca Research Website: http://faculty.cbu.ca/youth-engagement/default.htm
