Research Interests:
CBU chemistry has developed analytical
methodology and instrumentation to solve industrial problems for several companies in Cape
Breton and Eastern Nova Scotia. In each case the methods were developed for the companies'
own instrumentation so the technology could be easily transferred. Some of our techniques
are being used throughout the United States.
In addition to industrial applications, research labs are used for teaching (Chem
385/386/485) and for student research projects. Currently we are developing separation and
detection techniques for petrochemical products; working to develop equations to describe
and predict chromatographic detector responses; measuring
viscosities of bitumen and petroleum/solvent mixtures at various temperatures. We hope to improve on petroleum product flow
through pipelines;
testing novel Canadian-made GC column technologies; and are dabbling in the History of
Chromatography.
