          Dr. Brian Howe       

R. Brian Howe is a professor of political science and director of the Children’s Rights Centre at Cape Breton University, Canada. His fields of research are law and public policy, educational policy, children’s rights and human rights, and children’s rights education. He is the author or co-author of numerous articles and books including Children, Families, and Violence (2009), A Question of Commitment (2007), Empowering Children (2005), The Challenge of Children’s Rights for Canada (2001), and Restraining Equality (2000). He received the CBU Alumni Excellence for Teaching Award in 2002 and has been identified by the Canadian Education Association as a lead Canadian researcher (with Katherine Covell) in the field of citizenship education. The book, The Challenge of Children’s Rights for Canada (co-authored with Katherine Covell) was shortlisted in 2002 as the best Canadian book on public policy by the Canadian Political Science Association and the Canadian Policy Research Initiative. The courses he teaches at CBU include Children’s Rights, Criminal Justice, and Issues in Criminal Justice and Public Policy.
