                                    Introduction to Academic Writing

In this introduction to academic writing, students will read samples of student and professional essays. They will practice different ways of developing a thesis. They will write a classification essay and an argument and persuasion essay (value 10 pts each). They will become acquainted with the library’s printed and electronic resources in order to write a research essay worth 20% of their course mark. Students will receive instruction on how to evaluate sources and document them according to MLA and APA guidelines.

 Methodology: Lecture, writing workshop, and tutorials as necessary

Textbook: Eric Henderson, The Empowered Writer (Oxford University Press Canada, 2010), available at CBU Bookstore

 Evaluation: in-class writing 30%; essays 40%; final exam 30%

Sep. 16            Critical thinking, sample essay, using a dictionary

Sep. 21            Review: types of sentences, sentence errors, correcting sentence errors

Sep. 23                        Purpose, audience, situation (Sec.2)

Sep 28 & 30                Kinds of essays (Sec. 3); essay 1 is due on the 30th of September

Oct 5 & 7                    Paragraphs (Sec. 4)

Oct 12 &14                 Essay basics: the introduction (Sec. 5)

Oct 19& 21                 Paragraph development methods, theory and practice (Sec. 6)

Oct 26 & 28                Types of essays (Sec. 7); essay 2 is due on the 26th of Oct.

Nov 2 & 4                   Expository essays (Sec. 8)

Nov 9, 16 & 18           The research essay

Nov 23 & 25               The argumentative essay; research essay is due on November 25
